The cylindrical cavity in the upper part of the cylinder block is called the cylinder, and the lower half is the crankcase that supports the crankshaft. There are many reinforcing ribs, cooling water jackets and lubricating oil channels cast inside the cylinder block. It has to withstand the rapid changes in pressure and temperature during the combustion process and the strong friction of the piston movement.
